Any Gym Class Survival Tips?

Filed in Category Survival Tips

Gym class starts this coming symester. I’m unathletic, uncooridinated, and hopeless at sports (also not looking forward to the humiliation of the locker rooms). Any tips to make the experience more bearable, even “enjoyable”?

I’ve been in your situation–I’m extremely self-conscious in locker rooms, I’m uncoordinated, and I suck at sports.
Is your aim to get a good grade in phys ed? If you really don’t want to play sports and participate (which I recommend you try once or twice), at least establish a good relationship with your PE teacher. Help him/her set up equipment, or offer to volunteer certain things. Since gym teachers are usually lazy (ironically), they will give a great grade because of your help. E.g. I volunteered to do attendance for my gym teacher and automatically got 5 percent higher of a grade.
Depending on how comfortable you are, you can even ask your teacher for advice, because, trust me, you aren’t the first who’s had trouble with this. Gym teachers are probably trained to work with people like you. If you want to really achieve a lot during the semester, and if you want your gym teacher to be soft on you, you might even want to do this! But if your gym teacher’s mean bratty or weird, then don’t, of course. You have to feel very comfortable.
As for locker room stuff, the towel suggestion is good for showers. Wear cool sweatpants and a shirt you feel you look good in and feel good in. Wear lots of deodorant. If you feel great, chances are you’ll look great when playing sports.
Oh yeah, and when you play sports, be social at the same time. Make it look like you’re doing it for fun and that you’re not concentrating on being good at it. Have fun, and people will like to see that you’re trying!
Best of luck! Don’t worry; I’m sure soooo many of us have had trouble with this!!!
Oh yeah, if you have your period, DON’T go to phys ed. It can be highly embarrassing. Go to the nurse, complain about cramps. Seriously. The last thing you want is to be playing soccer etc. while having your period.
      BEST OF LUCK, SISTA!!

even though you aren’t an athletic person you can still participate in gym and get a good grade. the teachers look for you trying to do you best and move around. The locker room situation, i would say is go into a part where people don’t see you or change in the bathroom stall. We don’t take showers after gym so i don’t know how to help you there.

The first thing to do, is to drop the fatalist tone and adopt a more positive approach. If your mind is already set about disliking the gym class, you will have to change your mindset before the gym class can become “enjoyable”. Try to adopt an i-dont-care-what-other-ppl- think-about-me attitude….it helps a lot. It certainly helped me in a similar situation back in junior high. Also, try to take an active role in gym; this doesn’t mean that you have to be the best at atheletics. You can view gym as a class where you get to interact with your friends, socialize, and chat, while enjoying a relaxation from your academics. Adopt the positive attitude, and pretty soon you will be looking forward to gym class, trying your hardest, and enjoying every minute of it.
      Good luck in gym!

Make a friend that is worst than you at anything. That helped me when I was playing soccer. Also just try. Later you cna say to yourself, “Hey, I suck real bad, but I gave it my best.” or perhaps stand there and do nothing, gym teachers usually don’t notice people not doing anything, at least all the gym teachers I had.

well if you can pick what you do in gym class(like electives sign ups work) try table tennis then you wont have to change in front of every one.
if you cant pick, wear a tank top over your bra and make sure youre wearing clean panties. if your friends are taking this class with you, try having one person hold a beach towel in front of you while you shower and then you do the same for them.
      hope this helps!
