Can You Wrap A Horses Leg Just To Look Good?

Filed in Category Beer Games

I am going into a show. Just fun games like barrel racing, pole bending, egg on a spoon, root beer race, flag, ride a buck$ etc. I am wearing a purple long sleeved shirt because Maggie looks GREAT in purple. I am also getting a purple saddle blanket. Can I wrap er legs in pre wrap? Do I have to wrap it a certain way? will it make her ride any differently? will it make her go crazy? Will the judge like it?
All answers are appreciated greatly!

Instead of wrapping and taking the chance of wrapping TOO tightly and cutting off circulation, I always used splint boots. They come in a variety of colors and offer inpact protection to the inside of the horses leg. They are wonderful, look good and serve a purpose. You can buy them at any tack store. You can also find them at http://www.horsetackinternational.com and search for splint boots. They run about $14.00. They also have skid boots in a variety of colors for the back legs.

Why don’t you just wrap your horse’s legs in polo wraps? They are intended for horses :) Make sure you KNOW how to polo wrap- because if you don’t it could strain tendons, damage tissues, and all of that. The worst thing you could do though is wrap too loose, inconsistant in the pressure, and things. Not trying to scare you- but make sure that someone experienced either wraps for you, or shows you how to do it properly, or else your horse’s legs will pay for it. To keep them secure you can tape electrical tape around, to make sure they don’t come undone. Make sure to check them between your events though. You can also put on purple bell boots too just for the looks, even if your horse doesn’t need them. Have fun!

I would suggest mainly using the wrap intended for horses legs. Then if you put it on correctly- meaning not to tight and not to loose also so that it isnt twisting their tendons then she should be fine. It should make no difference though i would maybe try it 1 time before to make sure it makes no difference to YOU. Most of the time judges like those knids of theings thoguh it is mainly based on opinions
      hope this helps

If you don’t know how to wrap I wouldn’t do it. It also depends on what kind of wraps you’re talking about. If you do sports boots/skid boots that’s fine. Polo wraps you need to know how to do it properly. If you do sport boots you could wrap over it with that stretchy vet wrap in purple, there’s all kinds of crazy colors in that. Try it before the show cause horses that aren’t used to boots sometimes walk really funny till they get used to it. It won’t matter to the judge if you’re just doing speed events cause they aren’t judging on tack and turnout.

While it is possible, it’s not usually recommended. If polo wraps are wrapped incorrectly, they can cause bowed tendons amongst other issues. If you want color on your horse, just use tack, unless you are running barrels on a regular basis, then spend the money to get supportive boots. You can find them in almost any color you want. All of the events that you spoke about are timed events, judges have little or nothing to do with it.

Make sure you check with the show supervisors first and make sure you use polo wraps designed for horses that fasten securely. I once was disqualified from a show when using polo wraps because the show officials had outlawed any wrapped fabric around the horse’s legs. Apparently they’d had some bad wrecks when polo wraps came undone mid-pattern.
As others have pointed out, splint boots or bell boots in a fun color would be a great option :)

If you have a pair of old horse boots around you could spray paint them purple. That would be cool! If I was a judge I would think it was a smart cool thing to do. If your horse was alright with horse boots, it wouldn’t make it different.
      I hope this helps.
      Sorry if it doesn’t
