How Can You Tell If Your Puppy/dog Knows That You Are The Alpha Male?

Filed in Category Alpha Male

I have a very sweet beagle puppy, but as with all beagles, he’s fairly stubborn. How can I tell if he knows that I am the alpha male, or maybe he just has a typical stubborn beagle will?

      Nice question
He will move out of your path
He will let you go thru the door first
He will never demand you pet his head.. – the old shoving his head under your hand *demanding* you the underling to pet him.
He will initiate play with you…
He will not ever place his paws up on you to demand anything from you..
The alpha maintains control of everything
      Good Luck

You will know when you are considered the alpha male because he will not bark at you and will try very hard to please you. Good Luck!

You have to be firm with them from the beginning. Don’t let them put their paws on you or jump on you. My dog is fully aware of the pecking order in our family. My husband is the Alpha Male when he is home, but when he is gone he differs to me unless their is a strange male around. Then he takes over and stands in front of me and the kids till I tell him it is ok. With the kids he is gentle with them, but heards them like sheep with nudges of his head. Praise good behavior and ignore bad behavior and they will learn it.

you have to remember at puppy age they will try to be the alpha, and then they go thru a teen phase where they try to break all the rules to see if they can sneak into the alpha position.
if you can take food/toys away, or stare at him and have him break eye contact, or he’ll expose his underside to you, then you shouldnt worry about it. once they start being forceful thats when you need to put your foot down. being stuborn is just something to deal with, usually its not them trying to be a leader, just trying to get away with stuff (like any kid)

If you are having any success at all with training him, that alone is enough for you know the dog is viewing you as higher up the pack than him.

Food and walks are important. Only the alpha male decides when the others can eat and what they are allowed to have. The others might beg and bug the alpha male but are disciplined if they get to close to the alpha males food. The alpha male also eats first and leaves what he doesn’t want behind for the others. One small example is my dog won’t share his food with the cat he will some times growl and show his teeth and chase the cat off but I however can reach down and grab his food and move it if I need too. Also the walk…..The pack follows the alpha dog so if your dog will run off completely while at the walk there might be some domanece issues. If he will stay fairly close and pays attention that if you take a sharp turn he will know immedently and follow . Ceaser Millan says the walk is the most important part of training.

The best way to tell if your the dominate one in the relationship is to Check for submissive behavior. If you sit on the couch does you dog? When you go out does your dog want out? If your dog acts like you are the leader of the pack, and does everything you do then he probably has a good understanding of the relationship. If he doesn’t do this, then he might be mistaken and believe that he is the dominate one in the relationship! The sooner you establish dominance over your dog the better he will behave.

If you feed him you are the alpha male.
A Beagle is a chow hound, and will do anything for food. Watch how much you feed him as he will get fat before you know it.
Beagles are not stubborn dogs. Maybe a little hard to train, but I an not sure of that. Mine is great.
Snoopy is a very loving pup. He is a beggar, always looking for a handout. With the long ears and big brown eyes how can you refuse the “Sad Sack”?
He gets a lot of treats, as my other two dogs do. I guess I am an easy mark. They get most everything they want.
Your Beagle knows that you are “Top Dog”. They are a very easy going breed.

I have heard that if you take your dog and hurdle over him and when he fights back you keep your force on him, but not hurting him, he will then know you are the boss and he will respect you even more.
