A wolf pack is led by a dominant male and female, who are called the alpha pair – the male is the alpha male, and the female the alpha female. Usually the male is the more dominant of the two, and is therefore the ultimate pack leader, but it is not uncommon for the female to be the more dominant. Below the alpha pair is a second-in-command called the beta wolf, who may be male or female – the beta is dominant over all other pack members except the alpha pair. Next come mid-ranked wolves, whose status is fluid – for example, one may be dominant over another at all times except when feeding, when the other may take precedence. At the bottom of the heap is the omega wolf, the lowest-ranked pack member, to whom all others are dominant. The terms alpha, beta and omega come from the Greek alphabet – alpha is the first letter, beta the second, and omega the last.
A wolf pack is basically an extended family. The alpha pair are the only ones to breed, and usually mate for life. The rest of the pack will be their siblings and offspring, or just their offspring, depending on the particular pack. There may also be wolves that have joined from other packs.

It would be called the Alpha Female. The top ranking positions within a pack structure generally consists of both a dominate male and female. These are the two with the breeding rights and presumably a wolf can assume the high ranking position anytime once it has sexually matured (approximately at 22 months old). Since a wolf pack is essentialy a family unit, the dominate male and female are normally the parents with offspring from the current breeding season and also from previous seasons and even occassionaly with “adoped” wolves from other packs. These are the generalities and simplifications of the dynamics of a wolf pack structure and different variations have been documented.
