I’m Not Being A Feminist, But….?
Filed in Category Monthly Man Laws
When we refer to a couple, why do we always mention the man’s name before the woman’s?
For example:
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Jude Law and Sienna Miller
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, etc.
What do you think?
It also works with non celebrities, I just thought it would be boring.

That’s not always true,… but in most cases you put the man’s name first as a symbol of being the ‘head’ of household but if you asked me Jenifer Lopez should come ahead of Mark Anthony!

Its just good etiquette that’s all, but if you want to say the woman’s name first then go ahead we do live in an equal world now.

We live in a patriarchal society. The opposite of this would be a matriarchal society , where the power is in the hands of women. There are some societies like this, but the US is not one of them. Just look around, or listen to introductions and you will see this. Mr. and Mrs. so and so, blah, blah, blah. However when the women is in a position of power ( economic power) in this country and their husband or mate is not, they will put “her” name first. Oprah would be a good example ( although Stedman (?) is far from broke).

Never really thought about it – but will look out for that i future.
Though I must say that some of the couples its because he man is more famous (Paul is loads more famous than Heather and the same with Jude and Sienna).
It can happen the other way round though, like Jennifer Lopez and her fella or Kate Moss and Pete Doherty – I think its a lot to do with status.

I dont think many of them are still couples are they?
But to answer your question, when people get married the woman takes the mans surname. This has to do with christian regulations rather than etiquette or sexism on the part of everyday people.
I dont think it matters who cums first as long as they both do.
