#1 Stay dry no matter what. This is your number one priority, unless you are in a very tropical setting, hypothermia is your worst enemy. Water / being wet will kill you faster than not having food.

Staying dry is the most important. This applies to the “1 day to find warmth” rule. In Vietnam, as it was, socks were one of the most important things that could be gotten. Dry socks. Nothing is worse then having wet feet crammed in wet shoes for long periods of time. One day like that and you can count on fungus, that will severly limit you, and your chances of survival drop off radically.

My friend who is a U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret told me the 3 ones.
1 Day without warmth (Shelter)
1 Week without water
1 Month without food
According to that, you should seek those in order of priority or if you know you are going on an outdoor adventure, pack accordingly.
Also 2 most crucial survival tools are Will to live, and a knife.

When people are lost, they always walk in big circles, because one step in their pace is always longer than the other. You can walk for 3 days and only cover 1000 yards. It happens all the time.
So you should always use a compass and learn to navigate with it.

If people know you are missing, stay where you are. By wandering you make it hard for people to find you.
If overnight, try and gather a lot of brush, pine needles, etc to use as insulation when you sleep.
Most of the safety tips are about preparation prior to going out into the wild.
