What's wrong with this website to find those answers? One part, well you have backwards. when they are selfish thier esteem goes down... Self esteem doesn't go up or down. You either got it or you don't. People with low esteem and confidence are selfish because they don't believe in themselves, have no confidence that they're gonna be able to sustain themselves from one period of time to the next. I know that I will never go hungry, even if I have no money.

I just wanted to mention that searching for coherence in human behavior could be very frustrating. My advice to you is to try to avoid people whose attitudes for some reason or other affect you, or if you cannot entirely avoid them expect the behavior and work around it or develop techniques for doing so. It may take some experimenting with the person in question, but once you see what works best with him/her, keep doing it.

The pursuit of self interest is the basis of all human behavior.
Confidence just means you think you are good at the pursuit
"Selfish" is a VERY poor term.
It describes anti social behavior that is typically NOT in a persons self-interest.
The notion that the self can only get what it desires by giving up the desire to get,
Is the cognitive dissonance that creates the mental toxin know as Liberalism.
It inability to understand the logic of nature, result in actions that do NOT produce the desired result, or in results that are not consistent with one's true desires.
Which in turn erodes confidence.
To have confidence WITHOUT competence is NOT good.
The task of education is to create COMPETENCE.
This in turn creates CONFIDENCE.
If you just create CONFIDENCE, you get a bunch of idiots in denial creating havoc.
